The Gold Coast Hospital is the acute general public hospital for the Gold Coast region. It serves a community of approximately 500 thousand with considerable seasonal variation due to its appeal as a holiday destination.

The hospital has two campuses, one at Southport and the other at Robina.

Southport is the larger campus with approximately 425 beds while Robina campus has approximately 165 beds. Robina is expanding rapidly with an Emergency Department and expanded support facilities due to open in June 2007.

In January 2005 Griffith and Bond Universities commenced medical courses and medical students will be attending the hospital as part of their clinical training.

The state government has announced a new tertiary level health facility, to be known as the Gold Coast University Hospital will be built within 10 years.  The proposed site is co-located with Griffith University on the Gold Coast.  An image of the site can be found at New Developments.

The position of Executive Director Medical Services oversees professional standards, quality, patient complaints, ethics, awards/conditions relevant to senior staff, registration requirements and joint appointments.



Specialist/Senior Consultant

Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) (Staff Specialists) are medical practitioners who have undertaken training in a particular specialty and have completed the requirements of registration in the specialty.

Specialist positions exist at the Gold Coast Hospital in all specialties listed under Health Services - Divisions. The hospital provides all major clinical specialities except cardio-thoracic surgery and major burns and has training registrars in most specialities.

Registrars and Residents

Resident Medical Officers (RMO) are junior doctors who have successfully completed their intern year. RMOs are separated into the following categories for employment and training:

Junior House Officer (JHO) = 2nd post graduate year. A JHO is a medical practitioner in their first year of service after eligibility for full registration as a medical practitioner.

Senior House Officer (SHO) = 3rd post graduate year. A SHO is a medical practitioner in the second or subsequent years of practical experience after eligibility for full registration as a medical practitioner and who has not been appointed as a Registrar or Principal House Officer.

Principal House Officer (PHO) = 3rd and subsequent post graduate years. A PHO is a medical practitioner appointed as such who is not undertaking an accredited course of study leading to a higher medical qualification. A PHO position is an equivalent level to Registrar

Registrars are doctors who have been accepted into an accredited specialist training program in a clinical specialty.

RMOs work in teams led by senior medical staff and with support by Registrars in specific clinical specialties. They are employed on 12 month temporary contracts.

Interns

Interns are usually medical graduates in their first year of practice following completion of a medical degree.

The Gold Coast Hospital and other Queensland Health facilities are currently the sole provider of intern training in the state of Queensland. Interns are employed on 12 month temporary contracts.
