Family Women & Childrens

The Family, Women's and Children's Division provides Obstetric, Gynaecology, Neonatology and Paediatric services at the Gold Coast Hospital. Elective gynaecology surgery is provided at Robina Hospital. A Community Child Health clinic is also based at Robina Hospital. Community based services include Child Health, School Health and Breast Screening.

Obstetrics
Gold Coast Hospital services up to 3500 births annually. Since July 2005 delivery rates have increased suddenly and with the advent of a new birth centre deliveries are expected to steadily increase, well above expected population increases.

Antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care includes:

  • inpatient unit
  • nine room Delivery Suite
  • postpartum care in hospital or by midwife home visits - Obstetric Early Discharge Program (OEDP)
  • 16 Level 2 special care cots (32 weeks gestation)

Additional services include:

  • Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic
  • General Practitioner Share Care Program
  • Antenatal Classes
  • Lactation Consultant
  • Community Child Health Service
  • Birth Centre, due to open early 2006

Gynaecology

Gynaecology surgical services are conducted at both Gold Coast and Robina Hospitals. Elective and emergency caesarean sections are undertaken at Gold Coast Hospital. A new operative cancer gynaecological service is envisaged in the future.

  • Over 25 operating lists per month are conducted at Gold Coast Hospital in general gynaecology/urogynaecology surgery. Training and nontraining registrars assist.
  • Level 2 gynaecology surgery is undertaken at Robina Hospital.
  • Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic (EPAC) based in the Gold Coast Hospital Emergency Department. It identifies women who present with difficulties in early pregnancy to ensure they are provided with timely access to interventions.

Neonatology

A Special Care Nursery (SCN) at Gold Coast Hospital - Level 2 (infants born 32 weeks or more).

Paediatric

  • Inpatient services - Gold Coast Hospital
  • Paediatric Ward
  • Consultation service for surgical patients
  • Patients under care of a psychiatrist are managed by Mental Health
  • Child and Youth Mental Health Service
  • Child Protection Unit (CPU) based at Gold Coast Hospital. The CPU advocates for the right of children and young people to be safe.
  • Child Development and Behaviour Service (CDABS)

Free preventative community health services for families. Services include:

  • Baby clinics - Health advice for infants from birth to four years
  • Home Visiting - By referral
  • Breastfeeding Clinic - Practical assistance
  • Day Stay Centres - For where a longer period of one-to-one time with a health professional is required.
  • Parent Education Groups - An informal setting to discuss health issues. Guest speakers attend.
  • Open Clinics - Weigh and monitor infant progress between routine clinic visits.
  • Parenting Programs - Positive strategies to help parents.

School Health

Breast Screening

Breastscreening Queensland provides a service to detect unsuspected breast cancer, at the earliest possible stage, using free and high quality screening mammography for women living in the Gold Coast and hinterland areas.

Breast cancer screening and assessment services include:

  • Education
  • Community awareness activities
  • Screening mammography
  • Assessment of screen detected abnormalities
  • Counselling
  • Promote regular re-screening
  • Data collection, monitoring and quality assurance.
